Townsville: Taking it to the streets
3rd March, 2007
The Townsville Ocean Terminal and Breakwater Pacific projects continue to gather momentum as the Environmental Impact Study proceeds through its various stages.
As funder and developer, City Pacific is particularly mindful of the strong support shown by the Townsville community towards the projects, and considers it vital the community be kept informed at every level.
The first project soon to get underway is the development of the existing land on the Mariner's Peninsula, which will also include the existing Breakwater Marina in the Marina Basin alongside the Strand near Tobruk Pool. City Pacific and Mirvac have formed joint venture company Breakwater Pacific for this project, with plans by Mirvac to build up to 200 luxury waterfront apartments and beachfront homes to seven storeys on the peninsula. A development application has been prepared for the Townsville City Council for the first 100 apartments, with construction planned to start mid year for completion in 2009.
The second project is the Townsville Ocean Terminal Project (TOT) to construct a cruise ship terminal for the State. City Pacific put forward the proposal for this development, and Tabcorp, the owners of Jupiters Casino, is a joint venture partner.
The Masterplan for the TOT project is now State Approved and will be located on land reclaimed within the existing breakwaters in front of Jupiters Casino. The residential area adjacent to the ocean terminal is to be known as Breakwater Cove.
Will Hattingh, the Development Executive for the projects, says the ocean terminal has also been designed considering the requirements of both the US and Australian navies following discussions with key personnel.
"The input from the Navy was of the highest priority as they have been the primary users of the Townsville Port berths to date and cruise ships secondary." Dr. Hattingh said.
"The planned residential areas are low density in design, and will be separated physically by landscaping that will include dedicated sound barriers to minimise noise from the Terminal and the busy Townsville Port."
Dr. Hattingh said the $1 billion price tag is the completed sum for both the Townsville Ocean Terminal and Breakwater Cove development, due for completion 2010.
