The Monster of Martha Cove
30th September, 2006
It’s dirty work and someone’s got to do it.
Engineers at City Pacific’s Martha Cove site on the Mornington Peninsular have begun assembling a giant excavation digger which will eventually be doing tons of dirty work.
“It took eighteen semi-trailer loads to transport the digger from a mine site in Western Australia”, said David Newman, the on site director at Martha Cove. The bucket alone weighs 13 tonnes.
Once operational, the excavator will undertake the bulk earthwork for stages three and four, and toiling through the summer months to complete the task by May 2007.
Aided by two cranes, the crew is expected to take three weeks bolting together the pieces of this massive mechano monstrosity before it’s cranked up and ready to roll.
Although it will be working on a restricted site the digger which stands 6 and a half metres high, will not go unnoticed and will easily be visible from a distance. The luxury waterfront and marina complex of Martha Cove will be one of the largest in-land harbour developments in the southern hemisphere once completed.
